Don't Postpone Your Joy ๐Ÿ”…๐Ÿ”…๐Ÿ”…

Reader,

It has been a while. How are you?

As we navigate the intricate tapestry of life, I can't help but smile at the notion of me growing more 'mature' โ€“ though, let's be honest, laughter is one of the secrets to staying young.

In self-reflection I realise that: joy is not a destination we strive to reach but a companion we invite to walk with us in the present. In the HERE and NOW.

Yesterday

โ€‹
On Friday, I sent someone a morning message of love and grace and ended it with these words:

"Do something today that brings you joy and laughter".
โ€‹

The response was (paraphrase):

"I canโ€™t do that as work is so busy, but I plan to go on a short break at the end of the month, so I am looking forward to thatโ€.
โ€‹

It struck me deeply that the response from my dear friend was a number of things. It:

  1. Presumed that it was necessary to schedule a break to have fun or unwind.
  2. Represented a delayed reward.
  3. Prioritised hard work, the daily grind, over wellbeing.
  4. Assumed that during the trip โ€˜at the end of the monthโ€™ joy and laughter was guaranteed.

What about today though?

โ€œTodayโ€ is given, by grace alone.
โ€‹

Reader I ask you a question:

What will you do TODAY to bring yourself joy and laughter, even in difficult and challenging times.

And believe me I understand what challenge represents.โ€‹
Choices

I have learned that situations arise daily and we have the choice to respond or react. I mentioned this in another newsletter; that power we have to make an incisive choice when it matters.

But back to the question - what will YOU do today to bring joy and laughter into the next 24 waking hours?

It may be as simple as:-

  • Sending a message to a loved one
  • Stopping for 20 minutes to drink a favourite cup of coffee or tea
  • Calling a friend or family member
  • Visting a museum
  • Retail therapy that does not break the bank or that does break the bank (your choice:))
  • Walking or running or swimming
  • Knitting or sewing

I could go on.

What I am aiming for is the feeling at the end of your chosen activity. It may be something small that actually triggers joy. I believe in doing those little things, consistently over time. For me they make a difference.

Bizarrely, it requires discipline. Discipline to consistently show up strong for ourselves.

Does this resonate with you?

If so, hit reply and let me know! I definitely respond to emails.โ€‹
